You Have To Be Comfortable Speaking Copy

When you hear the word “copy”, you, like most people, probably think of words on a webpage or in a salesletter. What you might not think of is the importance of learning to speak in copy- strategically selecting your words and phrases for maximum impact to the listener.

In fact, I suggest that all my executive mentoring clients focus on speaking copy: developing a kind of script or series of sentences which are easy to say, sound good, and make an impact on the listener. Some would call this an ‘elevator speech’, but what I’m talking about is actually more than this. I’m talking about using your unique positioning and powerful language to tell the story of who you help and how you help them.

Focus Your Effort On What You Can Accomplish

As a busy entrepreneur (like all of you), it’s easy to have a “to-do” list which is very long, and to be angry with yourself when you don’t complete even half of what you planned. If you’re a Type A personality (like me), it’s easy to be self critical and to keep pushing harder and harder.

While you must be absolutely focused on moving forward, all the time, it is also important to move forward strategically. Sometimes I get frustrated because people focus on circumstances and situations they can’t control, and don’t take action on what they can accomplish.

Always Keep Moving Forward

When you are building a successful business, you need to be like a “bull in a china shop”. For those who might be unfamiliar with this concept, it means that you drive yourself forward, without stopping for anything that gets in your way.

This quality of moving forward is so important in business. Sometimes, we can get overwhelmed, confused, or paralyzed, and we stop taking the actions we need to take to grow our businesses. We let fear or doubt overcome us, and we lose track of our goals.
