One of the most influential books that I have read is the first book in the Rich Dad, Poor Dad series. The reason that this book struck a deep chord with me when I read it 9 Christmases ago is because I realized that I was Robert Kiyosaki’s ‘Poor Dad’—almost to a ‘T’.

Just like Robert Kiyosaki’s biological father, his ‘Poor Dad’, and unlike his rich dad—his best friend’s dad—I was running fast up the educational ladder. The big problem, and unrealized by myself until reading this book, was that I running up the wrong latter. This book opened up for a whole new series of business coaching questions. Most importantly it forced me to consider the financial state I was in, which was terrible!

The power of asking better business coaching questions. And the power of beginning a completely new paradigm. Without this book I would never have really realized this.

It was a time in my life when we were so broke that we could not afford Christmas for our two young children. Despite having no money, Fiona, my wife, bought me a round-trip airline ticket (On yet another line of credit!) to visit a friend in California over the Christmas Holidays. Fiona felt that it was a good idea to evaluate my life and my professional goals which were digging us further and further into debt—at this time I was about to start a PhD program.

There is one particular point in this book that I vividly remember while sitting on Santa Monica Pier admiring the beautiful stretch of beach north of the pier. At the same time I was admiring this strip of beach I was also reading the account of Robert Kiyosaki’s dad who was also overlooking the ocean and beautiful stretch of beach area in Hawaii and stating, ‘I can never afford to live here.’

Kiyosaki brings up this scenario to contrast this with his “Rich Dad” who makes a completely different observation when analyzing the same beach area. Kiyosaki states how he didn’t make limiting statements about what he could or could not do. Instead he always asked questions that focused on helping him bring about solutions. In this case his ‘Rich Dad’, when looking at the same beach area as his ‘Poor Dad’ asked, “How can I build something here?”
