Wondering why your business isn’t growing faster? (And no, it’s not the economy). More likely, it means you aren’t marketing aggressively enough. This is a problem for entrepreneurs, as we often jump from idea to idea, and sometimes lose track of the basics. We can be swayed by the latest and greatest, and lose sight of doing what we know actually works.

Just like you, I can sometimes get lost in new ideas or new strategies, and not always implement what I know I need to do. Since I know this about myself, one way I get around it is by making sure I have well defined business systems and processes.

Simply, a business system or process is a step-by-step outline of how core business tasks (especially marketing!) are to be handled in your business. This should include information about what the task is, as well as how often it is to be completed, and what the usual outcomes or results are of the system. (This last piece can help you track when systems or processes aren’t working as they should be.)

Let’s take something like regular blogging. To implement a business system around this, you would need to consider:

  • Who will be developing the content, and how often?
  • How will the content get onto your blog, and who will do this?
  • What results do you expect, and how will these be measured?

Once you have defined the business system, it becomes easier to decide if this is something you want to do yourself, or want to outsource elements of this process to your team. The most important thing is that you will be blogging regularly, and this is more likely to occur when you have taken the time to define the system and process behind it.

Where in your business could you use more systems? What kind of success could you expect if you put these in place?
