Developing Your Brand Positioning Strategy
The process of positioning your business (also called brand positioning strategy) is one of the most complicated issues in the world of marketing and advertising today. Many entrepreneurs still think in the short term, looking at a particular marketing campaign or introducing a new product, but fail to understand the issues of long-term branding strategy. The problem is that there are many different branding strategies available, and it’s difficult to know which ones will work best for you.
One of the hallmarks of building a successful business quickly is having a strong brand identity. Basically, brand identity starts with a concept. Who is the target customer you are trying to appeal to? Is there an existing need in the marketplace? Will your target customer spend money to solve the problem?
Of course, like with anything else, what really matters with brand strategies is where you end up. One of the most important things to realize is that, the farther ahead you can plan, the better of a chance you have to succeed. You should, of course, use branding strategies to plan out your short term approach. If you are just getting on the scene, how do you get people to notice you at first? If you are an old and well-known name, how do you get people to continue to think of you as an innovator and risk-taker?
You know that I advocate creating an initial positioning statement and then getting out into the marketplace as fast as possible. When we are talking about short-term branding strategies, what we’re really talking about is getting something good enough to take out to the marketplace and test.
Ultimately, as your brand identity and positioning becomes more solidified, you need to set concrete goals for building and maintaining your brand recognition and brand loyalty. You need to be able to support your brand from the abstract concept to its practical execution.
A strong brand begins with a strong concept and strong positioning. How’s your brand doing?
