In developing my training model around intellectual property, I realized that the biggest factor which creates powerful intellectual property is your personal emotional pain. Now, this might sound strange, but stick with me on this. I will explain it.

If you look at your life history, there is probably some degree of emotional pain you’ve experienced at one time or another. Perhaps someone disappointed you, or hurt you, or died. Maybe you recovered from a significant illness. Maybe your child was bullied at school. No matter what the source of pain, most of us would agree that we’ve felt some.

I always suggest that my clients look for strength in the places where they are weakest. This means that wherever they have felt the most emotional pain, they have probably developed some skills, tools, or habits which they have used to heal. And these are the same tools, skills, or habits that their clients would like to know about and be able to use.

This becomes the basis of a developing system of intellectual property. Even though there may be hundreds or thousands of others who have felt the same emotional pain, nobody will have solved it just the way you did- and that is why your system and process is unique.

Don’t try to copy existing models, create your own. List the top 3 most painful situations you’ve overcome, and then list, step by step, how you’ve overcome them. Think about how you can turn this into a coaching program that you could charge $5,000, $10,000 or more for. What outcomes can you promise your clients? And what would it mean to them to be free of their own pain forever?

When you have deeply considered these questions, your system becomes part of you, and is something you can sell with confidence and conviction. When you realize that what you know is valuable and can help others, you tap into your passion, and create a powerful legacy.
