Time Management for Entrepreneurs
Time management is a key component to running a successful business. As an entrepreneur, especially of a new business, you are likely to be managing several tasks at the same time, which makes it difficult (if not impossible) to complete everything as scheduled.
Though I do pretty well at maintaining a good work/life balance, I, too, sometimes get consumed by work projects which take up valuable time in the evenings and weekends- time I would normally be spending with my wife and sons.
So what gets in the way of good time management?
Usually, it’s a combination of lack of a clear vision, combined with unrealistic expectations of how long tasks will take. And, of course, the tendency to try and do everything yourself, even when you could outsource parts of it to other people.
Lack of clear vision most often means that you can’t decide what to do first. You don’t know which of the tasks on your “to-do” list will actually make the most difference for your business. So, sometimes, you start this, start that, start something else- but never actually finish anything.
Here is one of my secret tips: I never start anything new until I first finish my current project. I might only work on a project for an hour, but I make sure I have a clear vision for where I want to be at the end of that hour. Then I might go on to something else. I never try to complete more than one project or task in a given period of time.
If you are not clear on what you need to do to move your business forward, I’d invite you to consider becoming one of my students, and I will help you build your business efficiently and profitably.
Unrealistic expectations show up when we overestimate or underestimate how long a task will take us. Most of the time, we think too big about what we can accomplish today, and so we push and push, but never quite reach our goals.
Finally, even though it can be tempting to try and do everything yourself, this is a mistake. This means your business can only grow as fast as you, yourself, can move it. Instead, I’d recommend hiring good people to assist you as soon as you can, freeing up your time and energy to focus on exactly what you do best.
